Korean Music Shows
Korea is famous for its entertainment industry. Koreans are very talented musicians and artists. In the last weeks I had the pleasure to visit 4 non-verbal performances and I want to share my experience with you:
The first show I visited was THE DRAWING SHOW.
It is located near City Hall Station. But it was a little bit difficult for me to find the building, because it is hidden between other houses and there is no big sign that shows the way.
The show was all about drawing and the four artists showed different interesting techniques. For example, they drew with light and did some sketching for the audience. There was no clear storyline, but it was quite entertaining. For my personal taste it could have been more effectful, because I am already experienced with art. However for someone, who does not know the various styles and drawing techniques it will be some kind of experiencing a new world.
The facility itself is not the state of art, but it fits the needs. After the show the audience had the opportunity to take pictures with the artists and talk to them.

The second show I visited is named DRUMCAT.
This is a loud and explosive show with a group of young beautiful ladies, who show their passion for drums and music. They played a broad variety of rock, pop and classic music. All with a modern twist. This show had a lot of power and the audience was animated to dance and clap the hands together with the drummers. I could not believe that they could keep the energy level troughout the whole show.

The third show I attended was MISO.
This show impressed me the most. It was perfect. When I walked to the venue in the evening past an old stone wall of an ancient palace behind, it brought me into the right mood. The venue itself is set in a beautiful little street. It had an indoor palacio with a nice cafe. The staff was all dressed in beautiful traditional Korean cloth.
The show was set in ancient Korean times and took the audience to the southern Korean island Jeju. I liked this performance a lot, because you could feel that there was put a lot effort into detail. There was a whole orchestra with traditional Korean instruments and the musicians were also all dressed up. The stage design was also very impressing. You could get a glimpe into Korean culture and experience the beauty of Korean traditions. The music and dances were fascinating. I can totally recommend everyone to see this show.

The last show I was able to visit is called WEDDING.
And yes it is all about a Wedding ceremony and party. The plot is very simple. There is a groom and a bride. They marry and hold a party. But the brides father is against the wedding. It is a fun and modern show, with a very young cast. They play instruments, sing and dance. I liked the variety of music. There was a little bit for everyone. Swing, Rock, Pop, even Pop with Gangnam Style. The venue was easy to find, because the building is really eye-catching. At the end of the show there was a lovely extra. The host asked the audience to stay for a little bit longer. Then they showed some pictures of a couple and the host told us that this couple is sitting in the audience right now and they show come on the stage. So it turned out that is was a real proposal! The guy asked his girlfriend to marry her. I was really touched by this. It was almost my highlight of the show :-)
Address: 29, Yanghwa-ro 16-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul Exclusive Hongdae Music Show Wedding Theater Telephone: +82-2-739-8288 To sum up all of my Korean performance experience so far, I can say that Koreans know who to entertain. The target audience in all this shows were no doubt tourists. So they sometimes also said some lines in Chinese, English and Japanese. And the fact that these were all non-verbal perfomances with no complex and complecated plot and with a focus on music and dance, makes it suitable for an international audience. So anyone can enjoy these kind of shows, regardless age and language. |
